Conference: The History of the Hungarian Defence Forces – From Pákozd to NATO

Pákozd Military Memorial Park, September 27, 2024

On September 27, 2024, the Hungarian Atlantic Council launched a major new initiative with a conference held in Pákozd. The event was opened by György Csóti, President of the Hungarian Atlantic Council.

In his opening remarks, the significance and historical role of the Hungarian Defence Forces were emphasized—particularly their position during the Revolution and War of Independence of 1848–49. The establishment of the first National Guard battalions, under the instruction of Lajos Batthyány, laid the foundations for the modern armed forces.

The role of Sándor Petőfi was also highlighted, as he viewed the army as a symbol of patriotism. Throughout the conference, participants underscored the enduring importance of national defense in Hungarian history and its relevance in the current geopolitical climate—especially noting the need to restore the prestige of the armed forces within society.

This event marked the first step of a long-term project, which includes plans to publish a scholarly volume dedicated to the evolution and legacy of the Hungarian Defence Forces.
