Statement by the Heads of State and Government of NATO Countries on Russia’s Attack Against UkraineHungarian Atlantic Council Response

The Hungarian Atlantic Council (MAT) was shocked to learn about Russia’s aggression against our eastern neighbour, Ukraine. The escalation of a nearly decade-long conflict into full-scale war constitutes a serious violation of international law and poses a threat to the security of the transatlantic region. We unequivocally condemn this act of aggression.

The transatlantic community must apply all peaceful means available to compel the aggressor to return to diplomacy and engage in civilised dialogue. At the same time, we encourage the Ukrainian government to ensure that the millions of indigenous national minorities living in Ukraine enjoy collective rights in line with European standards, including the unrestricted use of their mother tongue in all areas of life.

The Hungarian Atlantic Council watches with deep concern the fate of the millions of refugees affected by the war and is committed to providing all possible assistance and support within its means.

We urgently call upon the Russian government to cease the bloodshed immediately and sit down for peaceful negotiations with the representatives of Ukraine.
