Study Trip to Brussels for the Winners of the NATO Competition – March 16–19

The winning teams and their teachers from the nationwide high school competition series “Youth in International Relations”, organized in cooperation between the Hungarian Atlantic Council and the Agria Universitas Association, participated in a four-day study trip to Brussels. They were accompanied by Dr. Ágnes Horváth, President of AUE, as well as volunteers from the Hungarian Atlantic Council.

On the first day of the program, the group visited the city of Bruges. In addition to exploring the city’s historical landmarks, a sightseeing boat trip enriched the experience. On the way to Brussels, there was also an opportunity to visit the seaside.

On the second day, the group was received at the European Parliament, where, thanks to Tamás Deutsch, they were able to attend a committee meeting. The discussion of agenda items, the rules of speaking, and the coordination of communication among MEPs speaking different languages provided an insightful experience for the participants. Later, the group visited the Parlamentarium, where a guided tour and interactive exhibitions offered deeper understanding of European integration and its historical milestones.

On the third day of the study trip, the group was invited to the Permanent Representation of Hungary to the European Union, where diplomat Márk Lakatos, responsible for institutional and personnel affairs, gave a presentation on the work of Hungarian delegates in the committees of permanent representatives. He also shared valuable insights on international negotiation techniques and presented internship opportunities available to young people. The day continued back at the European Parliament, where MEP Csaba Dömötör provided a comprehensive overview of the EU’s institutional structure and decision-making processes. This was followed by a visit to the plenary chamber. Afterwards, the group was hosted by the Foundation for a Civic Hungary, where President Ádám Kavecsánszki and Head of Representation Péter Tüttő gave lectures on the role of national sovereignty within the EU and the principle of subsidiarity. A roundtable discussion followed the presentation, allowing students to receive answers to their practical questions about the foundation’s operations.

On the final day of the program, participants visited NATO Headquarters, where Balázs Géczy, Deputy Representative of Hungary to NATO, and Colonel Attila Tarjáni delivered informative and practical presentations about NATO’s functioning, Hungary’s role, the challenges of building European defense autonomy, and the future of warfare. The session concluded with a Q&A, where the students received direct, first-hand, and practical answers to their questions. The group was then given a tour of the impressive building complex, gaining insight into the daily life of those working there.

The institutional programs transformed textbook knowledge into authentic and tangible experience for the students, allowing them to develop a realistic and comprehensive understanding of the institutions that shape their lives and Hungary’s role within them. Beyond the academic program, there was also time for sightseeing, during which the group explored Brussels’ landmarks, as well as its cultural and culinary highlights, returning home enriched with meaningful and enjoyable memories from an unforgettable trip.
