About the Hungarian Atlantic Council

The Hungarian Atlantic Council (HAC) was established as a not-for-profit, non-governmental agency in 1992 and was reorganised in compliance with the laws of Hungary in 1999. Its original mission was to promote Hungary's accession to NATO and to promote the as broad as possible acceptance of Euro-Atlantic principles and values in Hungarian society. In 1997, the Hungarian people voted in favour of the NATO accession by 85 percent in a referendum. To date, this is the highest proportion of any acceding country in supporting entry into NATO.
The Council's current activities foresee the integration of Euro-Atlantic principles, focusing on practical issues and disseminating informed knowledge and credible information. The primary objective of the Hungarian Atlantic Council is to strengthen Atlantic cooperation with other Member States, not forgetting the continuity, traditions and cultural characteristics of Hungarian history.

 

Its tasks include, in particular, to:

 

- promote the cooperation of democratic countries in Europe and North America,
- disseminate the fundamental European values and principles in the Hungarian society,
- act as a centre of ideas as an integrator of all organisations with similar commitments,
- represent Hungary in international fora with Atlantic commitment,
- inform partner countries about its historical past and traditions, while undertaking commitment to Euro-Atlantic principles,
- present Hungary's role with partner countries both in the European communities and the democratic countries around the world.

 

The Hungarian Atlantic Council considers that it is necessary to coordinate the Atlantic and national ideas, the joint representation of which in Hungarian society may even be of important social consensus-building significance.

 

The Council calls for a broader interpretation of the concept of 'security', with an emphasis on nuclear safety, rational use of resources, energy inventories and reserves. It also monitors climate change, terrorism, human rights and civil protection issues.

 

The Hungarian Youth Atlantic Council (HYAC) was established in 1995 as the youth section of the Hungarian Atlantic Council. It considers it a basic task to inform the student bodies in secondary schools and universities, as well as young professionals. HYAC participates in the dissemination of the idea of Atlantic ideas and international cooperation, in line with international youth cooperation (YATA) within the framework of the ATA.

 

The Hungarian Atlantic Council is a full member of the Atlantic Treaty Association (ATA).
